As part of a full renovation and extension of their Horsforth home, the Brays wanted a kitchen that reflected the character of their home while embracing modern family living. Traditional shaker cabinetry, natural walnut and carefully considered detailing came together to create a space that feels both elegant and effortlessly practical.
The result is a hand-built Caledonia kitchen, finished in a soft buttery cream and centred around a striking solid walnut island. Flooded with natural light from a vaulted ceiling and full-width skylight, it balances traditional craftsmanship with modern performance, creating a space that's every bit as practical as it is beautiful.
The Kitchen Design Brief
The extension created the opportunity to design the kitchen the family had always wanted: somewhere to cook, entertain and spend time together every day. It needed to feel bright beneath the new vaulted ceiling while embracing a more traditional style, with genuine timber, classic shaker cabinetry and warm, natural colours.
A generous island became the focal point of the design, providing seating, additional preparation space and discreet storage while housing many of the kitchen's key features.
A full bank of Siemens appliances was integrated into a single run of cabinetry, while a Bora M Pure induction hob with downdraft extraction ensured nothing interrupted the view through to the vaulted ceiling and skylight. A wine cooler, Quooker tap and cleverly concealed storage completed a kitchen that delivers modern convenience without compromising its timeless character.

A Traditional Kitchen Built Around a Solid Walnut Island
Every great family kitchen has a natural gathering place, and here it's the beautifully crafted solid walnut island. More than simply a place to prepare food, it provides seating for family and guests, houses the wine cooler and Bora hob, and brings warmth and texture to the cream cabinetry surrounding it. The panelled detailing, stepped plinth and aged brass accents give it the appearance of a beautifully made piece of furniture, creating a focal point that feels both elegant and inviting.
Surrounding the island is Caledonia's Applecross cabinetry, hand-built in Scotland and finished in a soft buttery cream. Reeded glazed wall cabinets add interest above the sink, while a full bank of Siemens appliances is integrated into the tall cabinetry to keep the room looking calm, uncluttered and beautifully balanced.
A Bora M Pure induction hob sits flush within the island, with integrated downdraft extraction removing the need for an overhead extractor. This keeps the view through the room completely open, allowing the vaulted ceiling and impressive skylight to remain the architectural focal point while maintaining a clean, uncluttered feel.
